They are complementary, not competitors. One creates the “container,” the other fills it with structured learning content.
🎓 What is the Courses App?
Courses is a Context module (similar to Groups, Events, or Spaces).
Key Role
It acts as the main container or “course shell.”
What it does
- Lets users join / attend a course
- Manages course-level membership, visibility, and access
- Tracks overall progress (when paired with Classes)
- Supports payments, social interaction, and community features
- Can hold various types of content
Think of it as: The classroom building + the official course enrollment.
📖 What is the Classes App?
Classes is a Content module specifically designed for sequential learning.
Key Role
It creates the actual lessons and learning path inside a Course.
Structure inside Classes:
- Modules → Chapters or sections of the course
- Classes → Individual lessons within each module
What you can add to a Class:
- Written text / lessons
- Audio & video files
- Direct video recording
- Simple quizzes
- PDFs and other file attachments
- Embeds (YouTube, SoundCloud, articles, etc.)
Important note:
Classes can only be created inside a Course context. Without the Courses app, you cannot properly use Classes.
Think of it as: The actual curriculum, lessons, and teaching materials.

Correct Building Order
Here’s the proper sequence when creating a course:
- Create a Course (using the Courses app)
- Add Modules inside that Course (using the Classes app)
- Add individual Classes (lessons) inside each Module
