Vacant Position Shephard: Sheep and Goats
Farm in Ceres district has a vacant position for a Shepard.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
•Daily care and supervision of sheep and goats.
•Move and herd animals safely between grazing camps.
•Ensure animals always have access to clean water and sufficient feed.
•Observe livestock daily for signs of illness, injury, parasites, or unusual behaviour.
•Report sick, injured, or missing animals to management immediately.
Assist with lambing and kidding seasons, including caring for newborns.
•Assist with vaccinations, dosing, dipping, tagging, and other animal health procedures.
•Identify and separate sick or injured animals when required.
•Maintain fences, gates, kraals, and handling facilities.
•Protect livestock from predators and theft.
•Count livestock regularly and report discrepancies.
•Keep grazing areas clean and assist with rotational grazing.
•Operate basic farm equipment safely (where required).
•Follow all farm safety rules and instructions.
•Perform other livestock-related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
•Honest, trustworthy, sober habits, and dependable.
•Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
•Willing to work weekends, public holidays, and overtime when necessary.
•Good communication skills.
•Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
•Respectful attitude towards animals and fellow workers.
RSA Citizenship
Experience Required:
Applicants should have experience with sheep and goats or be willing to learn the following:
•Basic sheep and goat handling techniques.
•Recognising signs of illness, injury, parasites, and poor condition.
•Herding and moving livestock calmly and safely.
•Basic feeding and watering practices.
•Assisting during lambing and kidding.
•Identifying pregnant animals and caring for newborns.
•Vaccination, dosing, dipping, and parasite control.
•Ear tagging and identification of livestock.
•Basic record keeping (births, deaths, treatments, and livestock numbers).
•Rotational grazing practices.
•Fence inspection and basic repairs.
•Predator awareness and livestock protection.
•Understanding of animal welfare and humane handling practices.

•Patient and calm around animals.
•Hard-working and reliable.
•Good attention to detail.
•Willing to learn new skills.
•Takes pride in keeping livestock healthy and well cared for.
•Punctual and responsible.
•Able to solve problems and use initiative.
